Schonstedt Instrument Company provides solutions for the detection and location of objects and phenomena below the surface of the ground or water. As a full business unit we design, manufacture, market and service instrumentation for --- Surveyors, Utilities (water, power, telecom, cable, sewer), Ordnance removal, Construction, Excavation, and Exploration. Our products are sold directly over the Web from our headquarters in West Virginia, and through a nation wide network of dealers and manufacturers representatives. We specialize in instruments to locate iron and steel (ferrous) objects, and pipes and cables (linear underground conductors).

Founded 57 years ago by Erick O. Schonstedt, the company took its early shape from the aerospace industry, producing magnetometers for over 400 satellites, including the Hubble telescope. The legacies of our beginnings are extremely reliable and rugged instruments. Although today we are almost exclusively focused on the commercial and industrial marketplace, our instruments are still suitable for launching into space, where repair is difficult or impossible. Our patented Heliflux® magnetic sensor technology is unsurpassed for its environmental stability and ability to detect ferrous objects to extreme depths.

In 1998 the company moved to its custom-built headquarters location in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia, about an hour's drive from Washington and Baltimore. Here we assemble and quality control our instruments, provide repair services, design and develop new products and manage communications with our customers, dealers, and representatives.
